WebQuest 1

This WebQuest is designed to educate students about the importance of nutrition.

Many teenagers find it extremely difficult to conjure up the energy and time to eat healthy food. Upon completion of this WebQuest, students will have a strong understanding about the benefits of eating healthy and about the importance of incorporating healthy nutrition into one's lifestyle. Not only will students gain awareness about what kind of food is healthy, but they will also acquire the skills of planning and creating healthy meals on their own.

Introduction

Do you love fast food? Do you find yourself craving a juicy "Big Mac" from McDonalds after watching videos like this? Thought so.
As delicious as fast food may be, there is MUCH more to it than meets the eye. The journey that you are about to embark on will open your eyes in a way that you have never imagined. Not only will you gain a great amount of insight into the inadequacies of fast food, but you will also learn how to take control over your diet.

Hold on to your plate during dinner, and get ready for a well balanced meal!

Task

As high school students at [FHS], you are in the process of becoming mature adults. It is incredibly important for young adults to know how to eat right, and this adventure will hopefully lead you in that direction. There are three main steps to your adventure:
1. You will select some of your favorite fast food meals from a wide array of menus.
2. You will learn about how the nutritional value of your chosen fast food meals compares with the caloric and fat intake prescribed for your age and gender.
3. You will learn how to create a delicious & nutritious meal for your family!

Process

Step One:

Create a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu featuring three of your favourite fast food meals. Each meal must be from a different fast food chain. Calculate the total amount of calories, fat and trans-fat in each meal. Record this information in your journal.
This journal will be handed in upon completion of the assignment. Be sure to write down all calculations used.
All nutritional information can be found at CalorieKing.

Here is a example of a possible menu: Breakfast - Egg McMuffin Combo (McDonalds)

Lunch - Chicken Club Combo (Wendy's)

Dinner - Southwest Super Sonic Combo

Step Two:

Research the suggested caloric and fat intake for teens of your age and gender. Compare the suggested consumptions to those calculated in step one, and record your findings in Microsoft Word. Your results may surprise you!

Step Three:

Keeping in mind what you have learned from the two previous two steps, create a new breakfast, lunch & dinner menu that both satisfies the suggested caloric and fat intake for your age & gender and still tastes yummy!
Please record all ingredients used in the creation of your meal, including measurements, in Word.
